Modems & Troubleshooting

Midco tests and certifies specific modems to work with our network – to ensure they deliver the speed and capacity our customers expect, as well as meet network requirements.  

Important: As of June 30, 2021, any non-Midco provided modem must have DOCSIS 3.1 technology. See the Approved Modems and DOCSIS Modems sections below for more details. 

Midco-Provided Modems 
  • Midco provides modems available for lease or purchase, which are already tested and approved for our network.  
  • We manage them – meaning we push necessary firmware updates, so you don’t have to.  
  • Plus, our customer care and field teams know tons about these modems – making it easier to help solve any problems that might pop up.  

(Note that different equipment is used for fiber internet or fixed wireless internet service.) 

Third-Party Modems and Routers 

If you’re considering purchasing and operating your own internet equipment, there are a few things to keep in mind: 

  • Even if you bring your own modem or router, it must be compatible with our network. See our approved modems list below for details. 
  • At initial setup of your service, a Midco Business technician will install any Midco-provided modem or equipment you bring yourself.  
  • Beyond installation, we are not able to provide technical support for third-party equipment that’s not provided by Midco.

Approved Modems

Midco tests and certifies specific modems to work with our network – to ensure they deliver the speed and capacity our customers expect, as well as meet network requirements.  

  • Important: As of June 30, 2021, any non-Midco-provided modem must have DOCSIS 3.1 technology. All the modems below meet 3.1 standards. See the DOCSIS Modems section below for more details. 
  • To view any modem’s user guide, click the respective brand/model name. 
  • Standard modems are non-wireless modems, meaning they don’t have Wi-Fi network capabilities. If you want a Wi-Fi network, choose a wireless modem or bring your own wireless router
  • Note that different equipment is used for fiber internet or fixed wireless internet service.

DOCSIS Modems

We offer service through DOCSIS 3.1, which delivers internet to your home and enables speeds for your devices. However, the age and software of your devices have a major impact the speed, performance and capacity of your internet. Please consult with your device manufacturer to determine the speed and other capabilities of your specific devices. 

Modem Reboot

You may periodically need to reset your modem to clear outdated or invalid network information, which may help the modem process information more quickly – similar to why it’s recommended that you restart your computer or other devices from time to time.

To reboot your cable modem:

  1. Unplug the small, black power cord from the back of the modem.
  2. Check the front of the modem to ensure that all the lights have turned off.
  3. After 30 seconds, plug in the modem.
  4. Wait for modem lights to be fully lit (not blinking).
  5. If you have a router connected, reboot that equipment as well.
  6. Once power is restored, wait five minutes for the modem to come back online. Test the connection again by attempting to access a public website such as Midco.com/Business.

How to Get a Modem

Midco leases wireless and standard (wired) modem equipment for new and current internet customers. Your Midco modem will always be an up-to-date model so you get optimal speeds for your internet package. As technology advances, we’ll update the equipment for your business, so you don't need to use your own modem or worry about keeping it updated.

  • If you’re a new customer, you can lease or purchase a modem from Midco as a part of your contract. A Midco representative will discuss your business needs with you to help you select the best modem for your business.
  • If you’re a current customer and need new equipment, contact customer care, as changes in equipment may affect your network setup.
  • If you want to bring your own modem, make sure it’s one that’s been tested on the Midco Network. Review our Approved Modems list on this page. Again, if you already have Midco services, please contact us to ensure the proper setup.

Best Modem or Router Location

An expert Midco technician will provide advice and guidance on the best placement for all equipment when services are installed in your business.

The further you’re away from your modem, the weaker your signal. This can be even more challenging if you place your wireless modem in a faraway room, as your building’s size and materials also impact signal strength.

If have a Midco-provided wireless modem and want to move it, please contact us, as moving the equipment may impact modem settings established by the Midco technician during installation.

Modem Power Light Off

If your modem light is off, there is no power going to your modem. Check all the cables on the back of your modem. Make sure they are plugged in tightly, and that the power pack is plugged into the wall outlet.

If the light is still off, try plugging the modem into a different wall outlet. If you still do not have power to your modem, contact us.

Modem Online Connection Light Flashing

Try to reboot your modem. If you cannot connect to the internet or you have to reboot your modem often, contact us so we can make sure your modem is functioning properly. 

To change your SSID (network name) and password

If your wireless password and network name are not listed in My Account, you may be able to access them through your modem. If you want to change your Wi-Fi password, you can only do so by logging in directly to your modem (using these directions) or by contacting us.

Important notes about changing your wireless information:

  • If you change your wireless network name or password, you will need to reconnect each device previously connected to your Wi-Fi, if you’d still like them to be online.
  • It can be easier to update all those devices if you change your network password and name (SSID) at the same time, so it’s easier to tell network names apart.
  • You need a device that’s hardwired or wirelessly connected to your Midco Wi-Fi modem.

To access your wireless network credentials, and if you wish, change them:

  1. Open your web browser, and type 192.168.0.1 into the web address/URL. Press Enter.
  2. On the login page for your modem, enter the following:
    • Username: cusadmin
    • Password: your current Wi-Fi password
  3. Click Login.
  4. Choose Wireless in the page’s top menu (or use the menu icon for mobile or small browser windows). Select Basic Settings.
    • Do not select the Wireless tab lower on the screen. Although it contains network information, you aren’t able to edit from this screen.
  5. By default, the 2.4 GHz network information displays. To view the 5 GHz network details, click the 5G tab.
  6. If you’d like to change your wireless network name (SSID), click the 2.4G tab. Delete the current network name, and then type your new network name.
    • We recommend a network name of at least six characters, and no spaces are allowed.
    • If band steering is enabled, the 5G tab will show a grayed-out network name. When you change the name for 2.4 GHz, it will update for 5G as well.
    • If band steering is not enabled, you must change the network name manually. Click the 5G tab, and type a new network name. Be sure to include ‘5G’ at the end of the network name.
  7. If you’d like to change your network key or password, delete the current password, and then type your new password.
    • Your password must be eight characters long. You can have the same password for your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
    • If band steering is enabled, the 5G tab will show a grayed-out network name. When you change the name key for 2.4 GHz, it will update for 5G as well.
    • If band steering is not enabled, you must change the network key manually. Click the 5G tab, and type a new network name.
  8. Click Save Changes.
    • If you changed the network information from a Wi-Fi connected device, you’ll be disconnected from the internet. Reconnect all necessary devices with the new network credentials.

Need to Know: Network Changes

If you’d like, you can change your network name and network key to make them unique to you.

  • The default network name (SSID) and password (network key) for your modem typically appears on the back of your modem.
  • A Midco technician will change your password during the on-site installation, if you’d like a custom one. If you need to update this in the future, contact Midco support.

Why change my network details?

  • Setting up a personalized network name makes it easier to find and connect to your Wi-Fi.
  • You may want to change your password to something you can more easily remember for you and your visitors.
  • Want to keep short-term visitors off your network? Visitors can use the public guest network and you don’t need to worry about people accessing your private network.

 

To update guest network information

  1. Open your web browser, and type 192.168.0.1 into the web address/URL. Press Enter.
  2. On the login page for your modem, enter the following:
    • Username: cusadmin
    • Password: your current Wi-Fi password
  3. Click Login.
  4. Choose Wireless in the page’s top menu (or use the menu icon for mobile or small browser windows).
  5. Select Guest and update the network name and/or password fields as needed.
  6. Click Save Changes. Your wireless settings are now updated.

To update basic static IP information

  1. Open your web browser, and type 192.168.0.1 into the web address/URL. Press Enter.
  2. On the login page for your modem, enter the following:
    • Username: cusadmin
    • Password: your current Wi-Fi password
  3. Click Login.
  4. Choose Basic in the page’s top menu (or use the menu icon for mobile or small browser windows)
  5. Click on WAN Setup, then ensure that your Assign WAN IP Manually setting is selected to enabled.
  6. Click Save Changes.
